RUSSIAN GUNBOAT ATTACK

HONG KONG, Aug. 30.
A Russian' gun-boat-, carrying two hundred marines, raided Chinese villages along Amuri River on Tuesday. An encounter followed wherein a Chinese corporal and five privates were wounded . by stray bullets.
News from Manclmli appears to indicate little fear of a resumption of large scale warfare. The Chinese are evidently anxious to secure a peaceful settlement, although there are no indications of their willingness to comply with the Russian demands. 1

Despite reports of ri possible amic-able-settlement of the Sino-Russian disptit'e emanating from diplomatic circles in Peking, the attitude of Chinese rind Soviet troops on the borders is unchanged. An’ 'official communique states' a force of ten thousand Russians was despatched "towards Khinggn mountains in western Manchuria (for the purposes of seizing the mountain passes.
