The following are the results of yesterday’s hockey matches played on Cass Square:—
FIRST ROUND
Mawhera A beat United A by three g'qals to nil, two scored by Miss McGrath, and one by Miss Leach. Hokitika A beat Blackball by two goals to nil, the scorers being Mrs Butson and Miss Glsen. Star A beat Kokatahi after a veryeven tussle by a hit behind, when extra time was being played. United B beat Mawhera B by a hit behind, after extra time\was ordered. Hokitika B beat United G by one goal to nil. SECOND ROUND. Mawhera A beat Hokitika C by two goals to nil, both scored by Miss McGrath. The losers put up a splendid fight, and gave the winners as good a go as ffny team. Hokitika A beat Hokitika B by three goals to nil, the scorers being Mrs Butson (2) and Miss J. Hall. Mawhera A beat Star A by two goals to nil, the scorers being Misses' N. Furness and McGrath. ♦ SEMI-FINAL. J* Hokitika A beat United B by two goals to nil, Miss Hall being the scorer. ■ ■ FINAL. . Mawhera A beat Hokitika A by two goals to nil. This game was fast and hard, but the winners held the upper hand all the way. Miss McGrath was the goal-getter.

BIG CROWD AT GISBORNE

'GISBORNE, Aug. 28
The New Zealand ladies’ hockey tournament commences here to-morrow, and the present prospects are for fine weather. There are twelve -visiting teams, viz: Auckland (two), Bush Union, Canterbury, Eastern (Southland), Hawke’s Bay, Rotorua, Ruahine tDannevirke), South • Canterbury, Southland, Wairarapa and Wellington will participate, with two teams from. Poverty Bay, a total of fourteen teams. All the yisiting teams are now in Gisborne.
The vistors were accorded a recepton this evening, when a welcome was extended by the Mayor, Mr D. W. Coleman, and other speakers. There was a large attendance, and a very enjoyable evening- was spent by; aIL, including the chaperones, players and friends of the visiting teams. It is estimated that 239 hockey visitors are in Gisborne, of whom about 170 have been billeted by residents of the town.
The tournament will open to-morrow afternoon, three grounds being used. The draw for the opening day is as follows:
A section: Poverty Bay A v. South Canterbury, No. 1 ground; Rotorua v.‘ Bush, No. 2; Ruahine-Dannevirke v.
uckland A. No. 2; Southland, a bye. B. section: Hawke’s Bay v. Canterbury, No. 1 ground; Wairarapa v. Auckland B. No 3;\ Wellington v. Poverty Bay B. No 4; Eastern Southland A. a bye.
A very full programme of entertainments has been arranged for the visitors, of which the most interesting function will •be on Sunday, when tiie visitors will be motored to Te Karaka, 19 miles from Gisborne, where they will be the guests of the residents of that district, and will be, recorded a typical welcome by the Maoris.
