OROWAITI BRIDGE

EMBANKMENT WIDENED.

WESTPORT, August 27

Since the earthquake, in which brick (buildings, chimneys and brick walls suffered severely, all available motor lorries have been actively engaged in carting the remains to various dumping grounds. With very little spare space in close proximity to the damaged areas, the sides of numerous streets are now paved with bricks, mortar and concrete.

The embankment approaching Orowaiti Bridge has since the ’quake been built up and considerably widened with such debris. The widened embankment is now proving a boon to motorists, and residents of the earthquake area are likely in future to put more trust in the timber structures which have stood shocks so well.
