SMUGGLERS OVERTAKEN
47 TINS OF COCAINE CAPTURED. (United Press Association. —By Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received this day at 8.30. a.m.) DELHI, August 27. After an exciting chase down the river Hooghly rummaging officers off the : Calcutta Customs last night made a haul of 1175 ounces of cocaine valued at over £13,000 from the fishing smack Garden Reach. Observing the smack moving suspiciously away from a steamer’s side, the customs pursued it, instructing oarsmen to dip their oars as silently as possible. The smugglers, aware, of the pursuit, immediately pulled away and an exciting race ultimately resulted iin their being overtaken. The smugglers jumped overhoard, abandoning forty-seven tins, each containing twenty-five ounces of cocaine.
