(Received this dnv at 8.30. a.m.)

SHANGHAI ,August 23,

, There hns been little actual fighting during the past twenty-four hours in the Manchurian theatre of war. Russians have been content with staging a rnidr in the vicinity of Manchuli, three hundred alight from an armoured train and peppering the Chinese garrison with machine guns. They withdrew before a heavy reply. There have been many small, skirmishes, too numerous to mention, along the border. An unverified report states that four thousand Russians are crossing Chinese territory, north-west of 'Lake Hinkai. A definite action is expected, in conseouence of the arrival of General Bleuuher. The Chinese are preparing for the worst.
