J)r Oscar Blanc, of Sydney, a well known alpinist, explorer, philosopher, and naturalist, born in Switzerland of French parents, made a brief visit to the district during the week. From here he proceeded on foot over the Lindus Pass to Hermitage from where he intends to'eross Westland via Copoland Pass, it being the special request olf the President of the New Zealand Alpine Club in Wellington thqtthe doctor include the West Coast in his itinerary. The doctor distinguished himself with a companion by being the lirst to cross from Zanzibar (East Coast Africa) to the, West Coast. On this occasion liis companion nearly expired. While in Wellington he was the guest of well-known mountaineers, including Mr Samuel Turner whose sudden death was announced a few days later.

The Otago Acclimatisation Society has decided to cull 500 deer in the Makarora district and a similar amount in the Hunter Valley. Their ballot lor deer-stalking licenses takes place on the 26th inst.

Mr A. Nicholls (Makarora) is due in the Dominion this week, having completed a two months’ tour of the South South, Japan, and Hong Kong.
