At Forest Hills with the first important upset in the National women’s singles in the defeat of Mrs Shepherd Bovron. Ibv Miss Palfrey, has come the rise of a new stai* in American tennis, namely, Sarah Palfrey, who is sixteen, just out of the junior. She played a remarkably steady game in gaining an B—lo, 6—o, 6—4 victory over the much more experienced British player. Miss Palfrey with development of a more vigorous service will go far, for she is already an exceptional voile,ver, and extremely quick as well as accurate on both fore and backhand. At Forest Bills, Betty Nuttall defeated Gertruds Dwyer (New York) 60, l> — -I- . Helen Wills defeated Mrs ' Charlotte Iloipsmer Chan in 6—o, 6 —l. Mrs Co veil (England) defeated Mrs F.jnbecott (Boston) 6—l, 6—2. Mrs -Watson (England) defeated Mrs Lamive (Rye) 6—2, .0 —0. In the doubles, Airs H. D. Eaton and'.Mrs Bronson (New York) defaulted to Helen Jacobs and Betty Nuttall.
All's Watson and Airs Afitchell 'England) defeated Airs Lestoi and Airs Laiurne 6—l, G— l.
