WESTPORT, Aug. 19

Granity was this morning the scene of a regrettable tragedy, ! the victim being the Rev. - .Leonard Pfeefer, Church of England minister. The decnesed was only'about 35-years of age, and an Englishman by birth, and had been in ill-health of date.’ He was residing at‘Mrs Lee’s ; -boarding house at Granity, where 1 'beylicd been s.ationed for the past fjvQ/.jfjq|iths,. having, it is .understood, * in Canada, whence he Now -Zealand. He had, it is staled, been an extensive traveller. Owing to his illness, ho had remained in bed this morning, and upon taking to him his breakfast, Mrs Lee.advised him to remain abed for the day. She returned to his mom about 11 a.m. in order .to inquire about his luncheon, when she received a painful shock when she found the dead body lying on the floor, with the throat cut. It is not known whether the deceased had any relatives in the Dominion. The news of the tragedy created a oainful impression at Granity, where the deceased was fairly widely known, and where his behaviour had never been such as to cause any apprehension of. such a tragedy. There will be an inquest held.
