SAWMILL HOMESTEADS IN DANGER.

WELLINGTON, August 19
Tile Acting-Secretary of the Post and Telegraph has been advised as following by the Chief Postmaster at Christchurch: The postmaster at Ivaikoura. reports extensive bush fires in Puhi Puhi Valley, fourteen miles north of Kaikoura. A sawmill and six or seven settlers homestead are in danger.
GAMING ACT,
OFFENDERS DEALT WITH
GISBORNE, August 19,
The Magistrate’s Court held a crowded capacity this morning when four well-known citizens appeared on charges of breaches of the Gaming Act. Arthur' Owen was charged with using his premises in Hallenstein’s Buildings as a common gaming house and Rutene Taina'k, Cornelieus Patterson and Samuel Bardwell. were charged wii" frequenting the street for the purposes of betting.
Owen, who pleaded guilty, was fined £IOO and costs. Tnkina was fined £2-5. Informations against Bardwell and Patterson were dismissed.

WHANGAREI, Aug. 19
There is a good prospect of the thousand pound mark being attained in Whangnrei and district. Contributions to the Northern Advocate Earthquake Fund now aggregates £960. The Mayor’s Fund exceeds £4OO.
A GIRL’S DEATH. WANGANUI, August 19. Agnes Ethel Hyland, aged 15, \vas thrown from a bolting horse on Saturday afternoon and seriously injured. She died this morning.
CORONER’S STRICTURES,
GREYMOUTH, Aug. 19
An inquest was held to-day on the body of Peter Kennedy. Coroner Meldruni, S.M. expresed the opinion that the proprietor of the Buck’s Head Hotel, Taylorville, was “greatly to blame” for serving the deceased four drinks when he was already under the / v influence of liquor, and allowing him to go home after dark with nobody in attendance. . The verdict was of death by drowning by accidentally faking into the river. ' COAL MANAGER FINED. GREYMOUTH, Aug. 19. •William, Wall, work manager of the Co-operative Jubilee Mine at Rapahoe, was fined £1 on each of two charges of failing by notice to specify the manner in which timber supports were set, and failing to take samples of dust mixture. Inspector Strongman said the offence had been continuous for -nine months. Most of the small mines'were avoiding the taking of dust samples.
