NEW ORLEANS RIOT

ANGRY TRAM STRIKERS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). NEW YORK, Aug. 14. News from'New Orleans states that the Acting-Mayor and four of the City Councillors were attacked by an infuriated mob' of tramway strikers in the Council Chamber. A police captain, battling his way to their aid with a drawn pistol, fired shots which wounded several persons. The riot was the beginning of wild disorder throughout the city, that was not ended until the, mob had stoned and burned a tramcar, and terrorised residents.

MANCHURIAN SITUATION. DISQUIETING REPORTS. (Received this dav at 11.25. a.m.) SHANGHAI, August 14. There are further disquieting reports of the'Manchurian situation from Japanese sources. It is stated that • force of Soviet cavalry crossed the . river Argun attacking and looting Dalainor village, killing a number of Chinese and throwing the bodies into the river. It is also stated thirty Soviet employees on the Chinese eastern railway were arrested by the Chinese as a result of the mines being flooded following a general strike. Observers report that the whole situation is fraught with grave possibilities. Chinese troops are organising border defences while Russians are also active.
