A FINE EFFORT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. - Within two months of the opening of funds for the relief of distress consequent on the earthquake, the sum subscribed to date is £101,832 9s 2d. CLAIMS FOR DAMAGED CHURCHES. NOT BEING RECOGNISED. ' CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 13. At a meeting of the Church Presbytery opinion was expressed that Church property came within the scope of Earthquake Relief. Notice was received from a clerk in the Westland district that damage to Church property was at least £SOO, but the Relief Committee considered the Church had no claim on the funds. The speaker said that Presbyterians had added their subscriptions to the Central Fund on the understanding that relief would be granted wherever damage had been done. It was decided letters be written to t.-e Mayor of Christchurch and the President of the Presbyterian Advisory Church, drawing attention to the fact that the claims of the Church were not being recognised.
