AN AMAZING ESCAPE
TOSSED BY LOCOMOTIVE.
WOMAN’S GOOD FORTUNE.
PALMERSTON N., August 7
An elderly lady had an amazing escape from death this morning when she was struck by a train in the Square, tossed into the air and thrown on one side, fortunately sustaining no more serious injuries than a broken collarbone, abrasions to her face, and bruises. She is, also suffering from shock. The injured woman, who is between 60 and 70 years of age, is Mrs J. R; Jack, of lljl Ferguson Street, Palmerston North. According to eye-witnesses, she had just alighted from a municipal 'bius at the Commercial Hotel corner. A train was approaching from, Terrace End, and although it blew its whistle several times the lady was apparently unaware of its approach and stepped. .right in front of it. When the engine struck her she wtas tossed four or five feet into the air and was thrown about twelve yards to the right and clear of the line. She was removed to the hospital for medical attention, but later' was conveyed to her home.
