THEFT OF TICKETS. (By Telegraph—Frees Association). DUNEDIN, August 12. At the Police Court, Harry Scott, an ex-tram conductor in the employ of the City Corporation, was admitted to three years probation and ordered to abstain from liquor, on a charge of stealing a blocS of tram tickets. j CAR THIEF GAOLED. DUNEDIN, August 12.. . William Alexander Robertson, pleaded guilty to converting a' car to his own use and assaulting a constable. The police stated the owner of the car missed it from the football match on Saturday and at midnight he saw it being driven by the accused, accompanied by other men. The owner gave chase in a taxi, overhauling the accused. He remonstrated with the accused -for taking the car, when the occupants gave him a thrashing. As the car was moving off, a constable jumped on to the running board and also got a rough handling, being punched about the head and body. Accused refused to disclose the names or his companions and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on the first charge and one 1 month on the second, to be concurrent. ■.
CAR TRAGEDY.
DUNEDIN, August 12.'
A car driven by Theodore Alien, with two' pass’engers, Mrs May Jones and Miss Bertha Simpson, when returning from Wajpori late last night swerved off the road near Berwick and plunged ten feet into "a" creek with three feet of water. The car turned over. Mrs , \\ Jones was pinned under and drowned. The others were brought to Dunedin Hospital with not serious injuries.

INCOME TaX
NAPIER, Aug. 12
The Hawke’s Bay County Council today urged the imposition -of a -universal Income Tax proposal in preference to the Graduated Land Tax. It was; contended it was unfair to make a farmer, showing a loss, pay tax on land covered by a, mortgage.

A SUSPICIOUS FIRE.
MARTON, August 12.
Shortly before five this morning a fire was discovered in two places in the (front and rear of premises occupied by V. Edhouse, draper, of .Bulls. The brigade, with a chemical engine, sup : pressed the outbreak, but not before considerable damage had been done. The stock suffered greatly from smoke and water. Later it was found that.fi wooden panel of the.*,i;ear, dooir had been broken. There is strong evidence of incendiarism.
Edhouse is at present in Christchurch'. An estimate of the damage done and particulars of insurance are unavailable.
FATAL SHOOTING ACCIDENT.
MAItTON, August 12
A fatal shooting accident occurred near Hunterville on Saturday, afternoon when John Robb, aged' 23, single,, a farmhand, out shooting rabbits with-a pearifle, and when climbing a fence the rifle went off, Robb' being shockingly wounded in the abdomen. Despite this he crawled back to a whare he shared with Smith, the schoolmaster at_Rataiti, but Smith was absent in Hunterville. On the . latter’s return some hours later, he found Robb, who was hurried to the hospital, but lie died on Sunday morning. ~
