WINTER SHOW

PROMISE OF FINE DISPLAY. [Special To The Guardian.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 9. The Winter Show preparations are now weil ad.-aiiced for the opening tomorrow night at 7.30 o’clock. Since Wednesday morning an army of workmen has been busy setting the exhibition in order. it will be the largest Winter Show yet held in Christchurch, and it is interesting to note that ninety per cent of the goods exhibited will be of British manufacture. The Westland stand erected yesterday, was being put in order to-day. It is- situated in the main building in Heatlicote Avenue, and is well situated for general observation. The stand is being utilised for displaying scenes of Westland, including many photographs and paintings. There is a "fine deer head taken in the Haast region in 1927 by Mr J. Forbes,, of Christchurch, as well as photos of deer stalking. Two scriptographs to be in motion, worked electrically, telling of tours in YVestland. These have been prepared and are loaned by the Railway Department. A further mechanical device, showing a railway in operation to the Coast was damaged in transit, and will not he ready for the opening, but will he set up later.

Quantities of literature, including illustrated pamphlets, will be available at the stand for free distribution; also a number of postcards of Westland scenes to he given away, each containing an invitation to the receiver to spend his or her next holiday over in Westland. Publicity matter in regard to Westland tours is to appear in the daily papers to-morrow. There is quite an interest taken in the fact that Westland is making a display, and the stand is sure to he visited by many thousands. The schools excursions are being well organised. Some 3,000 have booked up from Ashburton and over 1,500 from Tim am. Other centres will he similarly represented. The visit of the Coast children is being looked forward to with special interest. At the Show special precautions'are being taken against fire both by day and night, and nothing is being left to chance. THE WINTER SHOW. Mr Chas. Kirk, Secretary of the Canterbury Education Board, has issued’ the fqllowing circular to the headmasters of the schools in Christchurch:—*

v The organiser, has requested me to enlist the assistance ’of headmasters, and through them, the children, in making arrangements for the accommodation of a large party of pupils who will he coming from the West Coast to the Winter Show on Thursday 22nd instant and returning on' Saturday, 24th instant. It is suggested that if each city school could agree to find billets for a certain number, there would be no difficulty in meeting the position, and I should be glad if you would place the matter before your staff and pupils to see if anything can be done in your district. I understand Mr. Marriner hopes to meet the Headmasters’ Association shortly to discuss details. It is felt that the excursion will he a' highly interesting event in the lives of the young people from the other side of the Alps, where climatic, industrial, and civic conditions are totally different to what they are in Canterbury, and it appears very desirable that everything possible should he done to broaden the outlook of the young people and give them some idea hotoj their neighbours work and live.
