OBITUARY. MISS M. C. H. GASCOYNE. (By Telegraph—Press Association). HASTINGS, August 7. The death has occurred of Miss Mary C. H. Gascoyne, aged 90, a sister of the late Major Gascoyne; Maori War veteran. She was for many years principal of the Girls’ School, Nelson. Born in Northern India, she was a daughter of Ooloniel Charles Manners Gascoyne, Fifth Bengal Light Cavalry. She came to New Zealand with her parents and landed in Motueka in 1853. ROBBED HIS MOTHER. AUCKLAND, Aug. 8. A charge of forging his mother’s signature to a withdrawal slip and thereby obtaining £3O from the Post Office Savings Bank was admitted-by Alan Walter Adams, aged 20, in the Police Court. Mrs Adams said she saw her son handling her bank book in her bedroom, and later discovered £3O had been withdrawn from , her account. On investigating she, found her signature had been forged on a withdrawal slip. Replying to Counsel for accused, she said her son needed the money at the time as he was about to be married. He had been a very good son and had since refunded the money. The police said accused had made a clean break of the matter.

Accused was committed to the preme Court for sentence, bail being allowed.

NEW COASTAL 80AT..RATALS ROUGH TRIP. •. NELSON, August 8. The ■ Anchor. Shipping Company’s new steamer “Rata” of a gross tonnage of 974 tons, arrived at Nelson this afternoon. The vessel left the Clyde on i.2th June, sailing via Panama under easy steam. She received a severe buffeting for eighteen days while crossing the Pacific, but arrived none the worse for the ordeal. The Rata, which is a cargo vessel, is fitted with the latest equipment throughout. ANOTHER QUAKE. WESTPORT August 9. Westport experienced another good shake at 9.22 last night. Although the shake at 12,10 a,m. on Wednesday

was a -heavy and sustained one, it is surprising now many people slept right tliroug it. Evidently the quakes havt lost their terrors, even though they come in the night time. Westport’s 14-ineh water main, which was crunched and torn badly by the big earthquake on June 17th, lias been completely restored, the restoration including the laying, of. ninny new pipes. As the completion of this work gives Westport a supply and pressure of water possessed by few if any other towns, and removed all danger of big fires, tne people breathe freely again. Fortunately during the whole time when the water supply was cut off, and later when it was .only obtainable through Sin. pipes, no fires occurred.
