MATRICULATION
MARKING OF EXAMINATION PAPERS. WELLINGTON, August 7. A request that the Minister for Education (the Hon. Mr Atmore) would make an enquiry into the system of examining matriculation examination papers, and make a statement, with a viejw to . establishing more confidence in the minds of both candidates and parents, that examination papers were receiving sufficient consideration from competent examiners, was made by Mr A. Hamilton (W allace) .- The Minister’s reply, in the House of Representatives to-day, was that the matriculation ■ examination was conducted by the Council of the University of New Zealand, a body that was quite independent of the Education Department and. the Minister, and therefore the Minister had no authority to interfere in any wgy with the jurisdiction of the Council. “I may say, however,” continued the Minister, “that I understand that every care is exercised by the Council to make its examination results 'reliable, and to eliminate the possibility 'of' error, In every examination some candidatejS do not reach; the standard expected, but all complaints are enquired into by the Council,!and full consideration given to representations made.”
