DIGGERS FOREFATHER
AN ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING (Australian. Press Association) (Received this day at 11 a.m.) SYDNEY,. ;Aug. 9. Scenes of wild enthusiasm marked the annual re-union dinner of the Australian Imperial Forces at the Show Ground last night. Over three thousand five hundred diggers, were present. Prolonged cheering, following Mr Hughes’ remarks that alien enemies were in our midst, and that the services of the digger were needed as much in these days as they were in the war. • Mr Abbott (Minister of Home Affairs) indicated mat every effort would be made to secure the permanent establishment of soldier settlers in the primary industries. It was proposed to wipe off the debts amounting to twelve millions sterling. Doctor J. Purdy was re-elected President of the Returned Soldiers’ League.
