ITALY’S DEVIL ISLAND

ESCAPE OF TWO PRISONERS. ( United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received this day at 12.25. p.m.' PARIS, Aug. 8. Details of the escape of Roselli Lussu and Nitti from Pipari Island, cabled on Aug. oth., show that the escape was due to their splendid powers as swimmers. They contrived to reach the beach at night time when most of the guards were drinking at cafes. Fully clothed they swam to the mainland though searchlights were playing on the sea and shores. This is the first escape from Italy’s Devil Island yet recorded. There are four hundred guards on the island for five hundred prisoners.
