A NEW EL DORADO It is announced more or less officially that’the members of the British Association have discovered in SopthWest Africa' vast nitrate deposits extending over 10,000 square miles. If. this ,is literally true, the immense wealth that Chile has gained from her nitrates will speedily be surpassed in this remote and 'inhospitable corner of the Dark Continent. What with the gold of the Rand and the Kimberley diamond fields, and now these nitrate beds, Nature has been singularly bountiful to South Africa; and the future ownership of the Kalahari Desert may yet prove an interesting question for discussion between Britain, • Germany and the South African Union.
