The usual monthly service at the Kokatahi Presbyterian Church will be held on Sunday next at 2.30 p.m.

It is understood the Public Works Department will carry out the further wolrk of protection at Little Wanganui / river. There is a considerable expenditure involved in the region of £3OOO for the work proposed, which includes piling. The proposals have been approved by Cabinet, and on issue of the authority the work will be commenced. \

The death of the Rev. George W. L'Vhore, Presbyterian minister, of Whangaroi, occurred on Tuesday evening, after an illness for some months. Deceased is survived by a widow and four children, also five sisters, Mesdames Debenham and Harry Weenink (Greymoutli), Sister Agnes and Misses Bell and Madge Lochore (Auckland), and two brothers, Rev. J. Lochore (Petone), and Mr Wm, Lochore (Wellington). The late Mr Lochore was a former resident of Reefton and Greymoutli, having served a period at the Dispatch Foundry before studying for the ministry. He had been about five years at Wliangarei, having previously been for .a similar period aj> the Waihi Presbyterian Church. i

Recently a notification was published that the Imperial Government were issuing Memorial Plaques and Scrolls, together with a letter from His Majesty, on account of those members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who have died since being discharged from the Forces provided the death took place on or before August 31st. 1928, and that it was the result of War service. The Government has now received a despatch stating that the Memorial Plaque Factory will be closed as soon as the outstanding demands have been dealt with. In the circumstances, the Defence Department is forwarding to the United Kingdom a final list of applications, and .this will include all those received by the Department on or before August 26th., therefore the relatives of the deceased soldiers should not delay communicating with Base Records Office. Wellington, relative to their claim to receive Memorials. Subsequent to August 2fith. all applications of this kind will be declined, and the relatives of exsoldiers will not have cause to blame the New Zealand Defence Department if their neglert means to them the loss of the beautiful Memorials.

He was.. a native,of Lambton, New South Wales and was 49 years of age. - He had been., 35 years in New Zealand and h^L.,, suffered .from miner’s complaint. ; leaves, one brother, resident at Auck;£j N land.

The death occurred on Wednesday afternoon, at her residence, Upper Russell St. Westport, of Mrs J. O’Donnell. A native of County Clare, Ireland, and 64 years of age, the deceased had''been resident for about 20 years in Westport. Her husband predeceased her about eight years ago. She had been ailing for about three years. The late, Mr and Mrs O’Donnell were,.widely known, having been Master and Matron of the Charleston Hospital during the regime of the late Dr Simpson. 1 ~f;.

A regrettable accident occurred yes- . terday afternoon at Rapahoe, on the : J railway line, at about .1.30 o’clock,, whereby a little girl, Leola Russell,, 2J \ years of, age lost her left foot. The child, a daughter of. Mr, John Russell,, railway surfaceman, of Rapahoe, strayed upon uie line unobserved while there was a train there, and' when it , , , moved, the wheel of a truck passed over her left foot. The train . staff, however,, having failed to see the child, v were unaware of the accident,’ which was discovered by Mrs Russell, who had Dr Meade of Runanga, summoned. / He at once brought the little sufferer to the Grey River. Hospital, as it was found that the injured limb would have to be amputated.
