A .MEASURE INTRODUCED.
WELLINGTON, July 31.
Aii amendment of the Education Act has been introduced in the Legislative Council by the Hon. G. M. Thomas to provide facilities? for religious instruction in State schools. The measure is identical with that introduced in "last Rarliainent by the same Councillor hut ruled out by the Speaker, as it deaith with a question involved in the Religious Exercises Bill of Mr Holland (Christchurch North), which had been previously rejected. As Mr Holland has not introduced! ...e measure this session, the Upper House Bill has a claim for- consideration. It seeks to empower qualified! persons approved by the Minister of Education to give religious instruction 1 in schools half an hour on one or two school days weekly. During that time no secular instruction shall be given! to children not attending the classes for religious instruction, and no child' may attend religious instruction unless; the parent or guardian has signified' willingless in writing. State school' teachers are not required to p’ve .re! gious instruction hut must .p reserve discipline in classroom and splshW grounds. **
