OTIRA TUNNEL
A NEW RECORD. A new record for the haulage ol goods through tbe Otira tunnel fron the AVest Coast was set last week, when 14,496 tons of coal and timbei were hauled through. For the corresponding week last year 11,313 tom were brought over. The previous re cord was 14,247 toils, which was made during the week ended on May 25th. of this year. The Otira tunnel was designed to handle 1000 tons of goods a day, hut for the past year the average has been nearer 2000 tons. Despite this overload, there has been no hitch of any kind at the tunnel. A proposal is being considered by the head office of the Railway Department to work the tunnel at night awell as during tfie day-time. Thb would enable goods to be handled more expeditiously, as there would then be no need for goods to be left at Otira over night. Last week’s big total was comprised chiefly of coal and timber. The amount of coal brought through was large, and the timber was much greater in quantity than was tbe case last year. If has been noteworthy during the pasf few months that the amount of timber railed from tbe Const to Christ-r-burcb has increased greatly.
