THE MENACE OF SUBSTITUTES. There is nothing surprising about the stir that has been created among woolgrowers in Australia by the increasing vogue of substitutes for wool. The pastoral industry in New Zealand appears to have been less apprehensive of the danger during the past year or two than is consistent with a due regard for the importance of its branch of primary production. Sheepowners in this country are, however, now realising the gravity of the position, land are making some endeavour to co-operate with the Graziers’ Federal Council of Australia in its project of launching a worldwide publicity campaign, which will be directed to commending to consumers'the superiority of wool for clothing purposes over .the artificial silk that is being more and more manufactured and used as. a substitute for the dearer, though more serviceable, article derived from the sheep.—“Otago Times..”
