A fortnight spent on the Danish fisheries research steamer, the Dana, was interesungly explained by Mr R. A. Falla in a lecture at the Auckland University College 'buddings last week. Special interest was attached to the lecture from the fact that Mr Falla is shortly going to the Antarctic as one of the members of the Mawson expedition. He gave anacount of the strange fishes found at great depths, several of them having contrivances for emitting light, something after the manner of the glow-worm. He also described the well-known work of the leader of the Dana expedition,- Professor Johannes Schmidt, in following the life history of the eel—a great source of food in Holland. It had been shown that the eel travelled across the Atlantic to breed. When hatched, the young eels returned to the coast from which the parents had come, taking several years to get hack. The astonishing part was ■mat the young eels never went to the wrong destination. The eels from the coasts of Europe and from the coasts of America all breed in the Atlantic, but the young returned unerringly to the coast of their parents, and the young of the eggs of European parents never, for .instance, made for the American coast, and vice versa.
