A DEBATE

AN ENJOYABLE CONTEST. “That Mothers-in-law are Conducive to Domestic Felicity” was ably proved at St. Mary’s Club Rooms last evening, when representatives of the young ladies and'men of Sr. Mary’s Literary Club met in a friendly debate. There was a good number of members present from each Club, and judging by the spirit which prevailed, the evening was thoroughly enjoyed. Mr G. Wormington. who kindly acted as judge of the contest, spoke in an appreciative manner of the young ladies’ efforts at debating. It was their first attempt at platform speaking and their fine performance was’very commendable. He had much pleasure in,announcing them the winners by seven points, the prints gained being 264 and 257 .respectively.

The Judge’s remarks were endorsed by Rev. Father McKay; and Mr M. Daly, of Greymouth, who spoke in plausible terms of. the evening’s performance. \

There then followed a short musical programme the items, of which were thoroughly enjoyed, each performer doing well. At the conclusion of the debate a dainty supper was served which was followed by a • dance," the music for which was supplied by Misses A. Daly, L. Dale and U. Groufskv.

Tt gives great pleasure to announce that a silver cup has been donated by Mrs J. L. Turner for competition among members of the Club. This Kindly act is much appreciated and should be a good stimulus to further the interest in debating.
