ECONOMIC MISSION
TO SOUTH AMERICA, j (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 25. ! Lord d’Abcrnon and other members of the Economic Mission to Argentina and Brazil attended a dinner of the Latin American Society this evening, Lord d'Abernon, in a speech, pointed out tjiat his mission was appointed by the late Government and re-appointed after the General Election by the present Government, affording a striking example of continuity of policy. Favourable auguries were not wanting that practical results would proceed ifrom the mission. Firstly there was the determination of the Government declared on several occasions since they had assumed office, to pursue vigorously a policy of trade development. He was convinced they would implement this declaration.
Secondly, ho was deeply impressed with the vast possibilities in those great and progressive countries which the mission was appointed to visit. Their wealth and goodwill to this country and practical intelligence would facilitate the task of the mission who were men of action and affairs. Lord d’Abernon added: “We realise that in their political development culture and product, the South American Republics are essentially complementary to the industrial countries in the Northern Hemisphere, such as Great Britain. Being complementary, there is a certain absence of rivalry and relations of mutual esteem and fruitful co-operation become not only practicable but easy,, when friendship is not menaced by professional jealousy. Mr A. Henderson (Foreign Secretary) sent a message declaring Great Britain valued very lightly the sentiment which had subsisted between her and the Republics of Latin America. Commercial relations also were of first importance to both parties. While the present mission would visit Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, he was alive to the importance df extending inquiries later to other South America countries.
