The proposal to advertise the scenic and tourist attractions of Westland at the Canterbury Winter Show, opening in about three weeks’ time, has taken definite shape and the arrangements for the display are in hand. Space has been secured in a good position, in the Exhibition Building, and the stall will be prepared mainly with photographs and pictures of scenic and tourist resorts. The attractions' for deer stalking will be included, and some new pictures taiken by the Publicity Department in South Westland will be displayed. This; should. be : a special feature of the display. A quantity of publicity matter will be available for distribution. The Railway Publicity Department and the Tourist Department is also co-operat-ing. The former is providing two mechanical exhibits, and the latter a quantity of literature for free distribution. It is an opportune time to attract attention to the district. As a result of late earthquake conditions -here would in the ordinary course be some effect on the ordinary tourist and holiday traffic, but if it is made manifest that the district is still in business, and tliat .it its many scenic features have not been marred in any way, folk will take a more optimistic view of the position and there should be rather the desire to help the Coast which on the whole has bad rather a bad time. The earthquake period will have long passed before the holiday season cotnes round, and it would be well that in the meantime those intending to go holiday making should be considering the attractions of the Coast as a most delightful holiday resort, practically all the year round. For the coming season the main south road is going to he at its best. Practically all the streams as far as Waiho Gorge will be bridged and this good news should he noised abroad to the fullest. Hitherto there has been a menace in the flooding crossings, but with these eliminated the danger is removed, and the highway will be at its host for motor transport. At both Waiho and Wehelta the authorities are doing much to improve the access to the glaciers, and visitors will find a general improvement. With the firstclass accommodation provided at both resorts there is every justice in inviting the outside public to tour Westland, and the coming display should he a special medium to That end. The proposal is therefore to lie commended as a step in the right direction, and casting the bread on the waters, it should be returned during the coming season, manifold.
