FAMILY HELD UP. ON LINER NIAGARA. (Australian Press Association) SYDNEY, July 21. Pending inquiries, Peter Xury and family, the party who were unable to land in New Zealand, and who came to Sydney by the Niagara, are being detained aboard the vessel by the Customs authorities. Mr Xury states that lie was most surprised at the New Zealand authorities refusing them permission to land, as none of them have ever been in trouble. AN APPOINTMENT. SYDNEY, July 23. Rev.,Father William Cleary, Professor of Mathematics and Physics at Dublin, has been appointed to succeed the late Father Pigot in charge of the seismological, meteorological and astronomical observatories at Riverview College, Sydney. ' HOUSE FIRED ON. SYDNEY, July 22. A bouse occupied by Robert Lyons and family at Annadale, a Sydney suburb, has been subjected to mysterious attentions by someone witlu, a rifle during the past two week-ends. Eire,has been opened on the windows, apparently with a pea rifle, the glass being shattered and furniture being damaged, but the occupants fortunately escaped, thougn they are terrorstricken by the continued shooting.
SMALLPOX AT BRISBANE. BRISBANE, July 22. There were three cases of smallpox among the coloured members of the crew of the “City of Hereford,” which arrived at the week-end from American ports.
