Replying to a deputation which souglit a larger school in Auckland for deaf children and those suffering l.om defective speech, the Minister of E location, Hon H. He said that he would discuss with Cabinet the possibility of the establishment of a special school. ’FLU AT SYDNEY. REASSURING REPORT. WELLINGTON, July 20. In reply to an urgent cablegram sent by the Minister of Health to the Australian health authorities, inquiring concerning the extent of the influenza in Sydney, a reassuring cablegram was received from the Fedora, Health officer, to the effect that the outbreak of influenza in Sydney is in uo way abnormal for this time of the year. \ • SHOOTING WITHOUT LICENSE. AUCKLAND, July 19. Prosecuted by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society on charges of killing a lien pheasant and killing Californian quail without, a license, R. Kennedy, .a labourer, appeared at the Magistrate's Court this morning. He pleaded guilty. Counsel for the society said a ranger discovered a lien pheasant and two quail in a motor-car recently. The lion pheasant had been wrapped >ip and placed in the bottom of the car as if lo conceal it. “I killed the pheasant all right, but it was unintentional,” said Kennedy, “it was running when I was shooting at rabbits.” Defendant was. lined amounts totalling £lO. He said lie was out of work, and lie was allowed 14 days in which lo pay.

The Minister of Education visited the schools this morning and received local deputations. INTRUDERS IMSTURB ED. PALMERSTON N., July 20. An exciting incident occurred in a local private hotel on Thursday evening. Shortly after dark the daughter of the proprietress discovered two men in her room, investigating the contents of her hand-bag. Seizing (-no man, the young lady called for help. The intruder, it is alleged, struck her with an electric torch, and dashed away with the son and proprietor in pursuit. The chase was futile, the intruder showing a turn of speed, while the • pursuers were hampered by heavy garments. The other man jumped through a window, and made his escape. Both were stated to have entered the premises by the front door in a most casual manner.
UNUSUAL CHARGE. WOMAN ENDANGERED. AUCKLAND, July 22. A charge of an unusual nature was preferred against Peter Alexander ELmsley, aged 62, a farmer, in the Police Court. It was alleged that, within the past four years, and particularly between June IS and June 19 at Waerenga, being in charge of Letitia Ann Elmsley, tfc person who was unable, from fear and weakness, to withdraw herself from his charge and provide herself with the necessities of life, he did, without lawful excuse, neglect to supply her with such necessaries, so that her life was endangered bv such neglect. /
Magistrate Hunt asked where the accused’s family was. “ The accused’s wife is in a Salvation Army Home at present, and his two eldest children are in the care of the Child Welfare Department,” said Chief Detective Hammond. “ There are two others in Auckland.” Accused was remanded until Friday. The Magistrate fixed bail at two sureties of £250 each.
