GREYMOUTH, July 22,

Edward Michael Twohill was fined £7O to-day on a charge of dangerously driving a motor van,, which yycollided ;with a taxi. Evidence was given that Twohill Avas under the influence of liquor. ' ' " John Hamilton Avas fined £2 for- obtaining credit by fraud. He secured '"a* pair of shoes valued at 45s by falsely representing that a regular customer of the firm had spnt him to iTate’s bootshop for the goods.

SOLICITOR SENTENCED. AUCKLAND, July 22. The young Auckland solicitor, Raymond Bradford Purser, aged 28, who pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to nine charges of theft involving nearly £7OO was sentenced to three years’ reformative. Judge Kennedy said accused during nine months had stolen money from a man Avho trusted him. There were no circumstances to palliate the seriousness of the offence, or to justify leniency. He was unAvortby to belong to a profession AA’hos traditions Avere those of scrupulous honesty; Through the prompt action of the Law Society he had been struck off the rolls. He Avould be sentenced to three years’ reformative detention on each charge, to be concurrent.

DUNEDIN POLICE COURT.

DUNEDIN, July 21

At the Police Court, William Sydney King, on remand, formerly a steAvard, charged Avith stealing at Lyttelton a sheet, knives, spoons and forks valued at one pound, the property' of the Union Coy., Avas admitted to tAvelve months’ probation. James. Whitelaw Ramsey pleaded guilty to making a false statement under the Pensions’ Act. The police stated accused Avas a disabled soldier drawing a pension. He Avas also a superannuated servant of the Railway Department, a fact which' he had failed to disclose to the Pensions authorities. Restitution Avould involve about £6OO. Counsel said accused did not realise he Avas liable to disclose Avhat hie received from the raihvay, Avhich he thought Avas a refund of money. The case was adjourned to consider the possibility of restitution.
