THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
WAR CLOUDS. .... Trouble of a serious nature has risen between the Chinese and Russian Governments over the control of the Chinese Eastern Railway. This line is the completion df the great trans-Siberian railway by which Asiatic and European Russia ; were linked together before the close of last century. By the agreements of 1920 and 1924 the Eastern Railway is treated as a purely commercial asset,, f now. owned by Russia, but subject to right of purchase by China; and as the Chinese Government has found that it still has cause to complain of bleaches .'of faith by the Soviet Government, in regard to political intrigue as well as the administration of the line, it has risked the decisive step of arresting and deporting the .Russian officials and taking over tlie railway. To defeat China and Japan combined in a struggle conducted thousands of miles . (from the Russian centre of control would be an impossible task, and in spite of the importance of this railway to Russia, she may yet accept the inevitable.
