The death fook place at Christchurch on Tuesday of Mrs Lomas, wife of Mr George Lomas, of Christchurch, and sister of Mr Joe Morgan and Miss J. Morgan, of Westport. The late Mrs Lomas had not enjoyed good health for the past three months. Deceased is survied by ,a husband, two daughters,' and one son.
Writing in the New Zealand Railways Magazine, the General Manager of Railways (Mr H. H. Sterling) states that the latest figures in regard to traffic show that in spite of difficulties arising chiefly from adverse weather conditions, railway business has remained buoyant, the operating revenue for the current financial year to May 25th showing an improvement of £9561. over that of. last year.

Following an advance of about 20s a head in the price of well-finished fat cattle at the Addington stock sale last week, there was another rise of 20s on Wednesday. Good medium weight steers and good heifers made up to 50s per 1001 b. Heavy cattle sold very well, 1 also, showing, in the price per 1001 b, little difference from the medium weight sorts. Fat sheep maintained last week’s values, and in the fat pig pens porkers retained the Id per lb rise of the previous week. Vealers also kept up their recent high price. The ifat lamb yarding, which was a tail-end one, sold at a wide range of prices, none of which were Outstanding.
An aeroplane from Wigram Aerodrome piloted either by Captain W. M. Buckley or Captain H. H. Burrell is to make an aerial survey of the raised sea Spit. The work will be done under the direction of the Marine. Department and an experienced navigator of the Department will accompany the aviator on the survey. On a clear day it is possible to see the sea floor from an aeroplane, so that this forms a quick and easy method of investigating the extent of any submarine disturbance caused by the earthquake. At the same time an aerial survey will be made of the Karamea river. The aeroplane is expected to leave Christchurch as soon as the weather is fine enough for the. passage over the Alps. The tides on the West Coast have also to be low enough for a good landing.

The outbreak was subdued before any material damage was done. A dance is to be held in the Soldiers’ Hall to-morrow (Saturday) evening in. aid of the Earthquake Relief Fund. The price of admission is moderate and so a good attendance should result. The muSic will be supplied by the Southern Cross orchestra of Kokatahi. Dancers are assured of a pleasurable evening. Documents have been filed in the Supreme Court, asking for a declaratory judgment that the Mid-Canterbury Licensing Committee has* and power under the Licensing Act to grant a publican’s license to each of the five applicants in respect of the Y , premises situated in Ashburton. The T appeals filed are those of Joseph Scales, i in respect of the 1 Somerset Hotel, and of John Penman, in respect, of the Grand Central Hotel. The case for these is being conducted by the firm of Duncan, Cotterill and Co. The other three applicants will be represented respectively by Mr J. Mr C. S. Thomas, and Mr D. E. Wanklyn. The Mid-Canterbury Licensing Committee, at- its annual meeting, decided not to issue the licenses applied tfor in the Ashburton-district.
