WAIMATE SENSATION
MADMAN RUNS AMOK. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WAIMATE, July 17. Attired in pyjamas, and with his feet bare, a madman ran amok in rain-drenched Waimate in the dead 'lours of this’morning. His capture necessitated desperate means, for hr was a powerfully-built man. He -was an inmate of the Waimate Public Hospital, and was seen to leave about 2.30 a.m. The police were informed and', after a long search, he was discovered ringing the bell of the Catholic Clnirch. Besides the police, several others 1 were attracted to the spot by the prolonged bell-ringing, and, realising that the madman was dangerous they overpowered him, -and he was taken to the lock-up. Between the time of Ins escape from the Hospital and the ringing of the bell, the madman encountered the watchman .of" the. C.F.C.A. premises,, whom he chased and fought. Tlie watchman was struck on the head with itis. own torch, which the man had grabbed, and lie would have been in a bad way if the man had not censed his assault and suddenly left him.
The mail, w-lio is aged 23 years, has Seen committed to Sunnyside Mental Hospital.
