Bench awarded Tolley, amateur golf champion, £IOOO damages for libel against Fry and Sons, chocolate manufacturers, for publishing advertisements in sixtv-four newspapers, consisting of a limerick and caricature showing Tolley driving with chocolate in his pocket. Plaintiff complained that the advertisements suggested that he was making money out of golf. He was extremely jealous of his amateur status. A stay of execution was granted for an appeal on the ground that the damages were excessive.
