ROAD RACE
TJALARU TO CHRISTCHURCH. 1
The Dominion’s most important cycling fixture, the Timaru to Christchurch Road Race, is to he held on October sth., over the usual course of 112 nules. The race is again being promoted bj the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Utfion. In the past, the race has proved a most popular fixture, and every year attracts entries from all over the Dominion. The event decides the New Zealand Road Championship and is endowed with the richest prize of any race held in Australasia. Ever since 1899 when the first Timaru to Christchurch rac£ was held, champions have been unearthed through the race. These champions include Jack A rust and R. Arnst, the latter being the ex-world’s champion ‘•miller: the redoubtable Phil O’Shea, the greatest cyclist the Dominion ba« produced, who won the ra°c- in 1999 and 1913, also securing the fastest time on no fewer than six occasions, and who holds, the unique distinction of the Australasian R-oad Championship on three successive occasions; IT. G. Watson, who was sent to France in 1927 to compile in the Tour de France race of 3,300 miles ; and a number of otlinr prominent riders, including A. Ralston, of Dunedin, TI. Henderson, Palmerston North, and A. Birch. Christchurch. Nominations for the race close with the organising Secretary, Mr P. r Lucas, Christchurch, on September 21.
