FROCKS SHORTER
WAIST'S HIGHER
PARIS, July 29
Brilliant sunshine at Longchamp today brought forth a colourful galaxy of feminine fashion. In the paddock more new frocks were seen than at any race meeting held tliis season. The feminine waistline, it was noticed, has climbed several inches in the last few weeks. It is now almost an Empire waistline and is defined, especially at the hack. Be'ow, the frocks fall mostly with panels cunningly cut so as to dissimulate the extreme shortness so the design, which is barely more than knee length. Pillar-box red and other hues of scarlet and vermilion are certainly the fashionable colours, and they were to he seen on every side. In many cases a red frock was matched with a closefitting red felt hat. red shoes, and scarlet gloves with white stitching.
NO SLEEVELESS FROCKS. Silks and foulards printed by hand or painted with scarlet flowers and designs on cream or sky-blue foundations are also very popular and look extremely cool on so hot a day. It was much remarked that there were few or no sunshades, despite the fact that the tiny, close-fitting felt or straw hats were to be seen everywhere, coming down tight over the ears and just allowing the fashionable whiskercurl to he seen peeping out over- the cheeks. There were no sleeveless frocks, and many of the sleeves ended in a large double-backed cuff rather like a gauntlet. The new fashions are not meant for the flat, shapeless feminine form popular last year, but give full ,effect graceful curves and lines with a plumper effect than has been seen for some time.
