SERIOUS FIRE
VALUABLE RESIDENCE BURNT. A fire was discovered on Sunday morning about 1.39 o’clock by neigh- t hours, who gave the alarm, at the residence of Mr E. Stoop, Woodstock. The flames had a big hold when discovered, and in the absence of any water supply, nothing could be done - to • save the building, which was totally 1 destroyed, only the brick chimneys re- ■ maining. When discovered the flames had such a heat that it was impossible to go near the building, and the whole of the contents were destroyed with the building. There was no one on the premises at the time of the outbreak, Mr and Mrs Stoop and family having resided with hef father, M.r E. A. Wells, since his recent bereavement, and no one had been in the house since the previous afternoon. The residence was a very fine up-to-date one and the loss is a substantial one. There is no clue as to the cause of the fire. The building * is insured for £SOO and the furniture for £250, all in the Guardian Insurance Coy. s y* The fire made a great blaze, and was seen from the local Fire Brigade •tower, and was also seen in Koka- . ■ >' tahi.
