’BUS DRIVER FINED

AVELLINGTON, July 6
As the result of a collision botween a railway ’bus and-a stationary lorry on the evening of- June 27th, Thomas Corcoran, the driver of the ’bus, appeared at . the Magistrate’s Court charged with intoxication Avhile in charge of a vehicle, and also a charge of dangerous driving was preferred against him. After the evidence of Dr Pattie, ’Bus Inspector Randall, and several passengers, had been given, accused who is no longer with the Railway Department, was fined £2O, and costs and his license was suspended for twelve months. He was allowed a fortnight in which to pay the fine.
S.S. TAHITI STRIKES REEF
AVELLINGTON, July 4
On entering Papeete Harbour on June 22nd. the steamer Tahiti struck one of the numerous coral reefs, and suffered minor damage to her hull on the port side in the vicinity of the No. 3 hold. On the rest of the passage to Wellington,,-the pumps kept going to keep down, any water she was making. A diver.made an inspection of the damaged, .portion of. the hull on Tuesday mqrning, „ and a start . was made to effect .the necessary repairs. The jyork necessitated a delay of another twenty-four, hours in Wellington," ,but t,lie vessel- was able'to leave for .Sydney at six o’clock, to-niglit. AA r heh her cargo -is discharged there the Tahjti iyill. be dry-docked.
DRIVER’S LUCKY ESCAPE.
AVHANGAREI, July 4
James Leatlierby, aged twenty, bad a miraculous escape last night when A motor-car, of winch he was the sole occupant, was utterly wrecked and carried twenty yards to the cattle stops by the engine of a train at the Kamo Road level'crossing. A few minor lacerations requiring temporary detention in hospital wore the only ill effects Leatherby sustained.
