DEATH AFTER OPERATION

HAMILTON, July, 3.

The Coroner (Mr F. W. Platts), in giving his verdict this morning at the inquest on Thomas "William Atkinson aged nineteen, who died under an anaesthetic in the Waikato Hospital after a nasal operation, said that the usual steps to promote respiration had been taken promptly when the patient’s collapse was noticed by the hospital sister, but it was unfortunate that both nurses were out" of the ward when the collapse began. This experience indicated that in similar casese a nurse should be detailed for the exclusive attention of a patient lender an anaesthetic. This course was now followed only when the surgeon or superintendent so directed. The cause of death was difficult to explain wjith certainity. ‘ The medical evidence was that an enlarged thymus gland rendered' the patient especially susceptible to the action of an anaesthetic and 'the shock of operation; and that such a condition was/ not discoverable’ by? external examination. CLAIM FOR FLOOD DAMAGE

DUNEDIN, July 5.

A writ claiming £7OO as damages from March floods has been served on Otago Harbour Board by M. Stevenson and Co., contractqrs, who are the tenants. , It was mentioned after the flood that claims were to be taken by residents and property holders in the flooded area, but this is the first writ issued. ’

Raymond Bradford Purser, aged 28, an ex-Auckland solicitor, was remanded till July 15th for receiving £650 between August and April, requiring him to pay sums to David Ross and ho failed to do" so, thereby committing theft.
