CHRISTCHURCH, July 4

A fine of £5 was imposed yesterday on George E. Barton, who was convicted on a charge of driving/ at a dangerous speed. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., was on the bench. Barton made a voluntary appearance and pleaded guilty. The traffic inspector of the Heathcote County Council stated that Barton was observed to cross the intersection of Wainoni and Breeze’s Road at a speed of thirty-five miles an, hour He was followed by witness, who had to attain a speed of sixty miles an hour before lie could head defendant olf. Barton stated that he saw the inspector coming Ibehind him, and mistook him for a motor-cyclist who was wanting a race He jswas feeling in good mood as he had iust received promotion at his office, and he decided to give the motor cyclist a go for it. Barton admitted to . the Magistrate that he had driven a at tremendous speed “Racing on the steet is not allowed,” said Mr Lawry, in imposing the penalty.

In addition Barton was fined 10s for not having a driving license. He explained that up till week he had failed to renew his liren— hut had subsequently done so.
