DEPUTATION PROTEST. ALLOCATION OF VOTES. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, July 3. A strong protest against any altera- j tion in the system of allocating votes . for public works until there has been 1 a thorough investigation of the whole . position, was made by a deputatipn representing county councils in Auckland district which waited on the Minister of Works (Mr Ransom) to-day. It was pointed out that a reduction of £24,000, which it was proposed to make in the total vote, would have a very serious effect on the counties in the North Auckland district. Replying, the Minister undertook to give the matter his consideration, but would make no promises. He indicated that notices of new allocations had already gone out. FRAUDS OF CANVASSER , BLENHEIM, July 3. , John Anthony Crawford, aged 40 years, pleaded guilty to six charges of fraud and false pretences arising out of his operations in the North Island as a printing canvasser. He secured orders for printing calendars and advertising timetables from the Raponga, Hamilton, New Plymouth, and Stratford shows. He accepted deposits ranging from 5s to 255, promising deliveries from different printing firms, I which he alleged he represented. All of- the offences occurred towards the end of last year. He arrived at Pieton, where he was arrested on another charge, and was sentenced to three months. on the first five charges concurrent,''and three months cumulative on charge. MOTOR CYCLE BURNED. AFTER PAYMENT DEFAULT. BLENHEIM. July 3. Viggo Lumbye, aged 22, formerly of Hamilton district, pleaded guilty to a charge of mischief in that he destroyed by fire on . May Bth on tli6 Tekawhia-Ngaruawahia road, . a motor cycle valued at £4B, which he was purchasing on time payment from J. and W, .White, motor engineers, Newmarket Ho paid £lO on the machine, and when the firm attempted to regain possession for the non-payment of instalments, lie burned the motor cycle. July 2. , Since lie escaped from prison early in December last year, Daniel Henry Barnaby, who was arrested in Nelson' a fortnight ago, -as been adding to his list of crimes with considerable rapidty. He attracted the attention of the Nelson police when he broke into the ifiice at L. N. Montgomery’s garage md left with £6 0s 3d in cash and a ffiir of iiiotor gloves, valued at 255. As .reported previously, lie was arrested after a chase to Taliuna and vppeared at the Magistrate’s Court, barged with the above offence, Deective Sinc'air, however, had recognised accused as an escaped prisoner, who was also suspected of many more' rimes, and accused accordingly appeared before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M. to answer eighteen charges of theft or vrongfiil conversion at Nelson, Tdl«in'ui, Drttry Waitungafii, Ngatea; Auckland, Wellington and Takaka. Detective Sinclair stated that tin ;>ec. sth. lsiit year accused escaped roiii Hailtu Prison, where he was serving a sentence of five years for breaking; entering and theft, and also for escaping from prison. He was seneuced for these oft'enbes at Invercarvill on May 19tn., .1925, and at the ime of his escape; had frilly eighteen months to serve. The Magistrate, after hearing tile evidence, informed accused it was proposed to commit him for trial. He was inspecting a car at a motor garage yesterday evening, when lie stepped hack into a pit and received severe injuries from which he died.
