BLIND INSTITUTE

REPLY ROM MR TAYLER, . . •• WELLINGTON, June 29. . The Minister-of Education (the Hon. H. Atmore) stated to-day that lie had received -a letter from Mr E. ‘Douglas Tayler, supervisor of musical education, stating that he was extremely sorry that what he had written in last May's issue of the “ Education Gazette” concerning the financial position of the Jubilee Institute ’for the Blind (Auckland) had proved to be incorrect. Air Tayler states that he’had been informed quite definitely . that the Jubilee Institute was in the fortunate position of being so heavily endowed that it was not in need of support such as was beipg accorded by schools in the Old Country ,in raising funds tfrpm concerts in recognition of the work of Braille in inventing the blind method of writing words and musical notation He naturally assumed that the information was authoritative. He was taking steps to have a paragraph inserted in the July “Education Gazette” correcting the error, and asking the schools to remember first the claims of the blind in New Zealand. He had also written to the d secretary of the Jubilee Institute'expressing his deep regret for the false, impression created by his most natural mistake. Needless to say, he would never. have made such a statement on hearsay.
