WHEN THE CAR ROCKED.

An amusing story of the earthquake comes from New Plymouth, and concerns an official of the borough. At the time the *quake was commencing he was about to climb into his little motor car. He took his seat only to find the little vehicle subjected to a vigorous and most unusual rocking, The idea that an earthquake might be the cause did not enter his head. He immediately came to the conclusion that someone was rocking the car Jfrom behind. “I’ll catch him and teach him a good lesson,” said the inspector to himself, and, dismounting from the machine, he carefully stalked the unknown practical joker round the back of the car. He was more than surprised to find nobody, but it was some time before he realised the cause of the motion of the car.
