HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONDAY, JULY 1. The Committee met at 7 p.m. Present—Messrs A. C. Armstrong (Clmiimii.i), W. IJ. Sim .non. W. -E. Richards, R. J. Bed da i', l‘. Chosterman, H. R. Sweiiov, J. J. Breeze, and J. Conning. An apology was made fir the absence of Mrs Wilson.
The minutes were confirmed aiul orrespondence outward approved. IN W ARD CO R R ESP OND EN CJC.
From Canterbury Education Board in regard to subsidy.—Received. From same granting £lO towards payment of accounts.- Received. Accounts as scheduled were passed for payment. From Treasurer (Air Swenev) reporting on financial position, showing a. small debit balance in both general and ground accounts, —Received. From Visiting Committee (Messrs Pedder and Cbesterman) reporting on requirements at the school of a minor nature.—Received. It was resolved to obtain a few loads of sand ,to cover the cricket pitch during the winter, as a precaution against accident. The Chairman reported that some 40 loads of brown sand was required for the lawn, and some painting work at the flagstaff and front gate.—Approved and authorised.
The Rector (Mr E. Partridge) reported that after being closed for seven and a half school days owing to the earthquake the school bad reopened that morning. The attendance was good, except in the infant department in • which there- was a number absent owing- to illness. All the scholars in the secondary classes wore present. The chimney in the cookery room bad been damaged by the earthquake and was taken down, and would shortly be re-erected. This was the only damage done at the sclmol by the earthquake. The school football ten.m had 1 won the third grade competition having won all five matches played, scoring 114 points, with 21 against. The Inspector, Mr S. J. frwin. was 'at present making bis annual inspection of the school. A number of-requirements were mentioned. —Received. The Rector was authorised 1 to secure his requirements. It was resolved to congratulate the school football team on their success. Mr Swcney moved that consideration be given to the holding of fire drill in the school two or three times a year, wall a view to instilling discipline in cise of necessity. Seconded by Air Shannon.
Air Partridge gave his -approval to the suggestion and the motion was agreed to. Airs Wilson and Air Shannon were appointed visitors. • The Committee rose.at 8 p.m.
