STORMY WEATHER

WRECKS TELEGRAPH LINES. ‘By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, June 30. Stormy weather during the latter’ part of the week resulted in communication between Invercargill and Dunedin being completely severed jn the early hours of rriUay morning. The line was broken in Three place: in the Southland district section aWo. Jt Was possible to communicate with. Waipahi, but from tha point northwards to Clinton tiling: were in si fairly serious state. Two miles north pf Balelutha there was : oad break extending for one mile am.!’ further, breaks had been reported six miles north of Balelutha and one mile on the south side of Clinton.

All of the available gangs were working at top speed,to restore communication, but the break just north of Balelutlia was a serious one, and could not be repaired in a brief space of time. It was possible to ■ get in touch with Dunedin via Queenstown, hut that circuit was of dittle use, cam! would not carry a very heavy load. In the meantime- most of the traffic was held up pending the restoration of the main line of communication. It seems from what available information there was, that great difficulty was being experienced between Dunedin and Clinton. Excellent work on the part of the gangs, who effected temporary .repairs under trying conditions, resulted in communications again being restored' late this' afternoon." - , * " '
