SERIOUS OFFENCES
ACCUSED. CHARGED. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July I. Robert Francis Maddox, 27, a carpenter, was charged at the Police Court with an attempt to murder Jerke Didovich, at Northcote on June *2Bth. In reply to a request for bail, Chief Detective Hammond, said' he objected. Maddox was in a peculiar state of mind. He was very morbid and he (Hammond) was afraid that something might happen if the accused were released. The Court remanded the prisoner till July 18th., refusing bail. Jerke Didovich, aged 39, a Dalmation, was charged that on June 28th he committed a criminal assault on Lilian Emily Maddox, and was remanded till July Bth.
Counsel for accused, applying for hail ,sai.d Didovich called at- his office on Saturday and stated he had been chased hv a man with,a gun. Chief Detective Hammond objected to bail, saying,* “This person is entitled to protection, although lie may be a blasckguardP / 1 Bail was refused.
