THE GODIVA RIDE
MURIEL INTERVIEWED. ( United Press Association.—By Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received this day at 8.30. a.m.) LONDON, June 30. Coventry celebrated the granting of its birthright by a realistic reconstruction of Godiva’s ride, when Muriel iVlellerup in flesh-coloured tights, and long golden hair, rode a white horse through streets lined with cheering people. Muriel Mellorup • interviewed after the Godiva ride says that when she showed the committee’s invitation to Mum and D;]d they would not hear of the ride. “ But I explained the fee proposed, which I suggested should lie given to the hospital. I argued that as Godiva rode naked through the town to save poor people from heavy taxes, it .was little enough for me to impersonate her, so at length Alum and Dad agreed. hardest part was to keep my eyes downcast and maintain a demure expression when thousands of people were clapping and cheering, and I wasn’t at all nervous or embarrassed at,all those men staring. “ Why should I? I don’t think any modern girl minds being stared at. Even in the gunshine it felt a bit chilly so I was glad there was no rain.”
