The Standing Orders wete suspended" \ to enable the election of a Speaker to be proceeded with on 10th July, as Speaker’s term of office expires on the day prior to that date. ‘ The Council adjourned at 2.40 p.m, until 10 a.m. to-day (Saturday). THE HOUSE. In the House of. Representatives. Sir Joseph Ward made a statement outlining the immediate and the proposed steps the Government are taking to lelieve distress, provide'for refugees and restore communication in the areas affected by the recent earthquake. The following hills were introduced— New Plymouth Rorough Council Empowering Bill (Mr Smith). .Marriage Act, 1908, Amendment Bill (Mr Mason). Imprest Supply Rill, covering appro-,, priation amounting to L 2,399,600 wasi(\ introduced, the debate eontinuing-vVX throughout tlio afternoon and night and early morning, the bill being final- 1 |y passed through all stages. Local Bodies Empowering Relief of Unemployment Extension Bill was introduced as a matter of urgency, as it contained important provisions relating to unemployment, also being passed all stages. The, House rose at 2.5 a.m.
