CRUELTY TO HORSE

A REVOLTING CASE. CHRISTCHURCH, June, 26. Grass cruelty to a horse was proved against George Watson, who was charged by the Society for the Preveintion of'Cruelty to Animals, at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. The Inspector for the Society, Mr D. J. White, said that he found h horse on Styx Road in poor condition, lying on the side of the road, unable to rise. Further up the road was an express waggon, loaded with nearly a ton of wood. It was too heavy a load for even-a fit horse to draw. When he returned later, ho .found someone had attempted- to' kill the horse, apparently'with am axe, but the stroke was •too low down, and although the head tore a horrible wound,.the animal was still, alive and struggling. Witness destroyed the. horse! It was . subsequenty found that Watson was the owner.

Mr White pressed for imprisonment as a punishment, saying that the case was one of the worst in his

experience. , s The Magistrate, Mr Hi’ P. Lawry, S.M., said that if defendant had been a single man he would have gone to gaol. He was fined £5 with costs, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
