THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
EARTHQUAKE CAUSES. Concerning the theory ’of “faults” ao far as earthquakes were concerned, .L'rofessor A. U. Lawson, of Bukeley, California, said that it was now pretty certain that “faults” were due to the accumulation of elastic stresses in the. earth’s crust. When these stresses, reached the limit determined by the strength of the rock, a sudden fracture occurred; and this, caused an earth/ quake. .“In California it may be -eresnug to know that we have been measuring by trigonometry methods, which go to establish x tlie amount of slow movement in regions which have undertaken slow migration. That slow migration is a manifestation of stress creep, due to the banking up of elastic compression, and the measurements give means of arriving at some method of predicting the times of earthquakes. The method is only in process of development, however, and it will take many years to secure the necessary data to complete the system.”
